Islands

It’s King Crimson… add Formentera Lady to the list of essentials, but this is one album I won’t miss.

When it came out they were interviewed on a radio station in Montreal, and what I remember most about it was that they kept on playing cuts from the album that I didn’t like and (worse) they made fun of Pete Sinfield on the air, sneering “Oooh… he wrote the WORDS.” Not a good first impression – probably too much to overcome.

I don’t generally like songs about groupies or the road either as long as we’re at it, and “Ladies of the Road” is a double shot of keep it to yourself.

Lizard

Again, it’s King Crimson – just play it and marvel. I originally bought this as an 8-track and after listening to it the first time immediately returned it because there were so many warbly sounds I thought the tape was defective. Of course its replacement was just as warbly and in all the same places.

Brain-numbing power (Cirkus) and lots of fun (Happy Family, Indoor Games) makes this one my second favorite Crimson 1.x album. My apologies to the Boston Store in Massena for being a such pain in the ass.

In the Wake of Poseidon

Just a quick note here. I LOVE King Crimson. Got all their records when they came out, listened to them over and over and still get chills when I hear certain passages, but King Crimson has never been about “keepers”. Each of their albums are special in their own way and I’m going to have to cheat a little when I post their albums. So…

No real keepers for me on this one, but the album is really good and “Cadence and Cascade” and “Cat Food” each add something to the King Crimson vocabulary.

Does that make sense?
