Better than it twin, Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band, Lennon plays all guitars and most pianos. Produced by Phil Spector, this is by far the high water mark of Lennons solo career IMHO.
I gotta agree with Curty Ray. This album is still amazingly intimate and powerful nearly 40 years later, setting the bar so high that most of Lennon’s other solo work seems like a failure in comparison.
There’s an interesting documentary on the making of this album (done by VH1, I think) where they said that, after working on John’s album for weeks, they basically cut Yoko’s record in a day or two with her singing over the band jamming. Seen in that light, it might be possible to appreciate Yoko’s work (although to give it a similar title and cover photo as Lennon’s album almost guaranteed it would be compared to his music — and found sorely lacking).
