Another Cheep Link(s)

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

Amidst all of the Robyn Hitchcock madness you could ask for, here’s the Cheepskates’ Confessional, courtesy of TWILIGHT ZONE!.

From what I’ve been led to understand, Confessional is gone… all of the copies that were manufactured are out of the hands of Music Maniac, so if you ultimately want to buy it you might not want to wait a whole lot longer.

Now if someone could just post the Perry Como and Residents eps… I haven’t heard them in a while!

Wow! Ask and ye shall receive… the ever-reliable folks over at Power Pop Criminals have posted the above-mentioned eps. I’ve got a real soft spot in my heart for these recordings. They’re kinda odd and very fun. The Cheepskates may have played one of the Residents songs live a time or two, but we played “Catch A Falling Star” and “Round And Round” all the time at our shows and I still have them ready to play now, I just don’t perform often enough to dig that deep into the songs I know.

At any rate, get ‘em and take them for what they are – fun recordings by a band that loved any excuse to get into the studio.

When it rains… The Garage Punk Hideout has a live Cheepskates clip with go-go dancers. Probably in cha-cha heels, but I can’t say for sure.

Emmylou Harris-Gliding Bird

Gliding Bird

Here’s the deal on this record: if you find it, good for you but DON”T LISTEN TO IT. I’ve believed for years that Emmylou Harris is one of great artists of our time, and hearing this actually made me wonder if I might be wrong. Harris’ voice is not what it would ultimately become – it certainly sounds like her, but it’s often off-key and her phrasing is just… weird. From what I’ve read, Emmylou herself doesn’t much like it, either. I’ve gotten over the shock of hearing this, but you might not – don’t take the chance.

International Pop Overthrow 11-6-2009

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

Last Friday night I actually played my first live show in three years, as a part of David Bash’s International Pop Overthrow. Gary Pig Gold, Jeremy Lee and myself (we call ourselves “Next Big Thing”) did a short set of half originals, half covers, sometimes on stage and plugged in, sometimes not… and it was just plain great.

Musically, I was barely there: I had spent a good part of the week getting over the flu catching pneumonia, and in my still pseudo-delirious state I forgot most of the words, forgot how to play all four of the chords we actually use in our songs (that’s a lie, but you get my meaning) and pretty much refused to play any guitar leads because my fingers were acting like little aliens. Gary and Jeremy were charming and amazing, though, and we not only got through it, we nailed it.

The thing is, I saw a LOT of friends and acquaintances I hadn’t seen in a very long time, and realized how much I miss them. It’s my own fault for not keeping in touch with so many extraordinary people, and it’s my own fault that I only play live once every three years. Gotta do something about it…

The Very Best of Freddie and the Dreamers

I really like a couple of their songs, but Freddie and the Dreamers always gave me the willies and I’m not giving them their own category, which isn’t fair but can’t be helped. Years later Right Said Fred would have a similar effect on me. Come to think of it, Fred Schneider is a first-rate willie-giver… I sense a trend here.

So a bunch of genius-types walk into a bar and the bartender says “you can all stay here, just don’t sleep with my daughter.”

A fun album to listen to, especially if you’re a fan of Wilco and Jim O’Rourke, and I really wonder if I heard it a bunch more times it would get under my skin a little more than it did. There’s a punch-line in there somewhere, but I can’t find it right now and rules are rules, so…
